Women’s Legislative Caucus

Maryland General Assembly

Congratulations to Speaker Adrienne Jones

May 6, 2019

The Women's Legislative Caucus congratulates Delegate Adrienne Jones on her election to the Speakership of the Maryland House of Delegates. The Caucus appreciates Speaker Jones’ long-standing commitment to improving the lives of women and their families in Maryland member as well as her service with the Women's Caucus - past and present. This year, we are especially grateful for her co-sponsorship of women's caucus-supported legislation such as Gender Diversity in the Boardroom-Annual Report (HBl 116) and Joint Resolution (JR 0011) recognizing Women's Veterans Day.

As the first African American, and the first woman, to be Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, Speaker Jones is among a small group of distinguished women to serve in this capacity. With her election, there are now seven women serving as a speaker of a state house in the United States; there are also eight women in the presiding position in a state senate chamber, for a total of 15 women in presiding positions. According to the Center for American Women and Politics, Speaker Jones is the third African-American woman in the nation to hold this office. The Women’s Caucus celebrates this historic milestone for Maryland and for the nation.
